SICEE assist in lighting up the newly constructed Guga S’Thebe Theatre in Langa

The multipurpose Guga S’Thebe Theatre is located in Langa. It was constructed out of seven (7) shipping containers. The containers were cladded with innovative wood, straw and clay panelling. Inside acoustic enhancing padding were used to line the roof. The theatre consists of ticket office, storage, toilets, backstage, kitchen / shop, seating for 200 people plus a recording studio on the upper level. The construction team consisted of local students, volunteers and students and architects from Germany. Work took place during school holidays. Building material consisted of innovative “self-building” techniques, creatively sourcing materials wherever they could and used donations they received. SICEE assisted with the electrical design drawings and liaising with the City of Cape Town for electricity to the site. SICEE donated light fittings and conduit material. SICEE also assisted by procuring additional electrical material from Bellco Electrical and secured an electrical contractor, Dorman Projects, to carry out and assist the students with the electrical installation.
Construction Period July 2015 to March 2016.
